5 Writerly Things That Scare Me

We all have fears.  Sometimes they hold you back from doing things you want to.  Today I'm going to be open with you and share 5 writerly things I fear.

1. Historical fiction.

Here I am, sitting my little fantasy cave writing whatever my imagination comes up with.  None of the "facts" in my story are wrong because my genius brain I made them up.  I do aspire to write a historical fiction, or at least a historically based fantasy someday...but I'm scared of getting facts wrong.

2. Comedy.

I love funny things (as long as they're clean).  Seriously, one of my favorite things to do is laugh.  But...writing comedy seems like it takes an extremely clever person to write it.  Here is another "someday".  (I'm just curious though, does it take writers a long time to come up with funny stuff?)

3. Pitching my book.

I'm a shy introvert who stumbles over words when talking to strangers.  Yeah...pitching my book terrifies me.  Not to mention that I don't know how I'm going to initiate the pitch.  Do I start by saying, "Do you mind if I pitch my book to you?"  Or do I start when they ask, "What is your book about?"  There are so many "what if" scenerios...

4. Reviewing a book I didn't like.

I know that this book came from the author's heart and was rewritten and revised over and over again.  What if the author sees my review?  What if I stop someone from buying his or her book?

5. Editing.

Because editing is overwhelming and involves tearing my "baby" apart to put it back together again.

What are some of your fears when it comes to writing and publishing?

  1. Historical Fiction!!! I love the Viking age, but when I tried to write a Viking fiction, I made it in a fantasy world so that if I messed something up, I wouldn't have to...I really don't know, have gotten it wrong?
Pitching my book. In the nursery at my church, the ladies ask me about it and I say, "Um, it's a fantasy..."

    1. Yes, that is what ended up happening to me with The Clockshifter. One day I will write an actual historical fiction! :)

The same thing happens to me (though in different places). :)

  2. Even though I have written historical fiction, it is still scary to me, which is probably why I completely switched over to fantasy. I still base a lot on historical facts though. I do wish I was better at comedy or writing extremely clever or witty characters. I don't think that's something you can force. Anything funny in my books is when the characters took over. Prince Daniel, for instance, is entirely his own character. Sometimes he shocks me with the things that come out of his mouth. ;)

    1. I find some of the best fantasies are somewhat based on historical fact. *Cough*Ilyon*cough* :)

Characters do tend to have minds of their own. I am so glad Prince Daniel took over. He is awesome. :)

  3. Yes, Alea! I am writing a historical fiction, and I sometimes wonder what I might be getting wrong. =) It will take a lot of editing before it's close to perfect!
And I completely agree on writing a negative review...not only because the author may be disappointed, but because of the other readers...the ones who LOVED the book. =)

    1. Good luck to you! Maybe someday I will be up there with you fact-checking my book. :)
I never like seeing bad reviews for books I love...so I am hesitant to write bad reviews for books that aren't my favorite. One thing I do, however, is make sure to find something I DID like about the book. :)

  4. Dude, saaaammmeee. But I have done a little bit of comedy and-- honestly, coming up with the funny stuff isn't that hard for me-- it just happens. But I'm always scared that no one else will find it funny, sooo... Anyway-- yes to this post. :)

    1. The closest thing I've come to writing comedy has been really dumb LOTR fanfiction stories. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed this post!

  6. I agree with you on ... well, basically all of those :D. Though I do think that my want to pitch my book would overcome my fear of pitching my book if it ever came to that.

  8. YES. I totally agree with number 4. Like, I didn't like the book and I have legit reasons for not liking it, but I don't want to stop other people from liking it and I don't want to hurt the author's feelings when I know how much goes into writing the story of your heart...? *sighs* It can be a very scary situation.
