It's Okay to be Bad at Grammar

Writers write, so they should be grammar wizards...right?

W-R-O-N-G

There is always that awkward moment when.....

"Should there be an apostrophe here?"
"I don't know, ask Alea. She's a writer so she'll know."

And then I say, "Uhh, I don't know.  Google it."

I'm going to say it now that I am not a grammar genius.  At all.  I didn't really know much about independent and dependent clauses until we went over it a couple of weeks ago in English class.

Writer's are storytellers, not a walking book of grammar rules.  We aren't always good at grammar.  It's okay.

IF YOU WRITE YOU ARE A WRITER.  Period.

I now step down from my soap box.  :) Keep writing, you Amazing Genius Writer.

-Alea

  1. I totally know what you mean, I'm not bad at grammar, but I know writers who are. At least they can come to me for help sometimes...unless I've just had a mind blank and have no idea! :)

    1. Yes like me... hopeless at grammar, and I am even doing the grammar course thing like you and still I forget it all! I do try I want to be good at it but it just does not stick, though I must say in my first drafts of things I tend to ignore grammar, mostly.

    3. Clare, my first drafts are the same. (And my second...and third...) Hehe. Good luck with your course!

    2. *grins* Thanks! It was surprising, but I might end up with a b if I'm lucky!

  3. Grammar. Eh. I don't think about it too much. My mom is really amazing at grammar and editing, so when she is grading my papers for school, she catches all that grammar stuff. I'm sitting there thinking: WHERE DID YOU LEARN ALL THIS FROM???

    1. My mom is great with grammar too. :) Sounds like she is a keeper.

  4. Funny thing is, I've never really 'properly' learned all of the Grammar rules because we never found a course for school that we could stick with. As a writer, I've just kind of picked it up as I go along. I think that was the best way for me to learn, really. I can spot odd sentences and figure out how to fix them (normally) and my Grammar is most always correct.

    1. Sometimes that is a best way to learn rather then memorizing a book of rules. :)

  5. I agree, but it helps SO MUCH if you are good at grammar!!! And it's even better when you have a mom who catches all the mistakes. ;) She is my #1 grammar police!! (and English teacher...so...)

    1. It must be so much easier. My grammar is pretty much, "This sounds grammatically correct. I'll spell check it." Hehe. Sounds like you have an awesome Mom/grammar police/English teacher!

  6. Thank you for this post! It's good to remember that if someone's a writer, they're not automatically good at grammar or spelling. It can be super useful to know the basic rules of grammar though . . . it can make editing a whole lot quicker and easier. But sometimes those rules just don't stick. And that's okay. :)

    1. I agree, Emily! I know for a fact those rules don't stick in my head. LOL.

  7. Indeed, not all writers are grammer wizards. I certainly am not :D.

    1. That's what line editing and the use of spell check is for. Hehe. :)

  8. Yeah, I'm pretty terrible at grammar. People assume I must be good at it since I write but I look at them and go "I failed a grammar test in high school." lol!
