So You Want to be a Blogger ||| Starting Out

So you want to be a blogger, huh?  It may seem as easy as coming up with a name and posting, but honestly, it is not so simple.  There are so many things to consider...but here is the basics on how to begin.

1. Figure out what you want to blog about.

In general, what is your blog about?  Are you posting bookish things?  Food?  Fashion?  Exercise?  Life?

2. Come up with a name.

Make sure that the name is intriguing and conveys what your blog is about.  If your blog is named Delicious Food by Nancy, you should probably be a food blogger, not a fashion blogger.  Also, make sure that you like it and won't go change it on a whim.  You should always keep your blog name the same.
Tip: Make the URL to your blog the same as your blog name.  Using the same example as above, it would be www.deliciousfoodbynancy.blogspot.com.

3. Design your blog.

I don't know about you, but if a blog doesn't look professional, I will most likely leave before reading anything.  That is how important design is.  You want it to be eye-catching, clean, and related to your name and niche.  Don't be afraid to learn from other blogs.  Use their ideas (though please don't steal their names or exact designs.)

4. Write posts.

This is why you started the blog anyway!  Figure out how often you want to post and try to keep it consistent.

I am making this into a series, So You Want to be a Blogger.  I plan to expand on each of the four points.

A Thank You

Thank you all who took the survey!  A lot of you had great tips on design, and I thank you for that!  I am trying to keep the essence of the old design along with making it easier to read and cleaner looking.  Rest assured, this is not the way it will look once I am done.  I am still working on it.

What blogging tips can you give to new bloggers?  How did you come up with the name for your blog?

  2. For me, the best thing for a new blogger to do is to find an advanced blogger who can help them through the process! This makes everything so much easier!!

    1. I am constantly looking to my other writer friends for blogging advice, whether it be figuring out how to use something on Blogger or the actual writing of posts.

  3. I would have a schedule for posting, I am starting one. And I came up with my name because I felt like I was slapping God's name on my books and calling them Christian, so I am now writing for him. my blog is http://theartofwritingforhim.blogspot.com/

  6. Nice tips! Personally, I loved your old design, but I'm definitely interested to see what new stuff you do with it. :)

I came up with the name "Summer Snowflakes" because, like snow in the summer, I'm a strange and unique anomaly, lol. And even though I blog about a lot of different stuff, I try to make all of my posts reflect that. :)

    1. I decided to go with a new design because the old one was easier to read and the old header didn't look very good with a solid background.

Summer Snowflakes is a very nice name. :) I also love it that it has a special meaning.

  7. This is definitely good starting advice. ;D I always get confused when people's urls aren't their blog names! Like I'll type in a lot of blogs in manually and then I just get so STUCK when it says the blog doesn't exist but I'm sure that's the blog's name. Gahhhh. >_< XD So yes! I highly agree with that one. Also consistency in posting is also a good one, I think, because it helps readers to know when to come back and what to expect!
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  8. These sound like some great tips! :) I've been wanting to start a blog, but have been having a hard time on deciding what to blog about, what to name it, and how I'd make time for it. I can't wait to read your other posts! ;-)

    1. Those are hard decisions. Maybe make a list of ideas. A blogging schedule also helps. Block out time specifically to blog each week, or however often you wish to post. Thanks for stopping by!
