Why Authors Should Be Merciless

Dear Author,

WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO MY AMAZING CHARACTER?! THEY WERE SO CUTE TOGETHER!  I LITERALLY JUST THREW THE BOOK ACROSS THE ROOM!

That book where everyone you love dies (a.k.a. most amazing books).

So why should you, as a writer, be merciless as an author?  I mean, you absolutely hate seeing characters you love stabbed, shot, killed, and anything else the author has the imagination to think of.

1. It makes your readers care about the characters more.

2. It makes them scream at you.

3. It makes the story more realistic.

4. It raises the stakes.

5. For some reason it usually hooks the readers even more.

Have you ever killed a character?  Was he or she a major character?  How does it make you feel when an author kills a character?

    Erm...yes....I've killed a character (or two, or three...) Both major and minor.

    Sometimes I get angry when an author kills a character and I can't see the reason WHY. But most of the time, it surprises me and ends up having a much larger impact on the story, so I admire the author for that. (Even while I'm weeping bitter tears.)

      I always get angry when an author kills a character needlessly. When it is necessary, I do the same thing as you: admire the author through a river of tears. *Sighs* Thinks of a certain character...

    Great post! Sadly, I have killed characters before, and I even have a few who I haven't actually gotten to their death scenes, but I know it's gonna happen eventually. It hurts me as the author as well, but sometimes, it's what's necessary for the story.

    For me, my anger depends on why the character died. If, like I said, it's needed for one reason or another, then I'll grieve of course, but it makes it easier to bear that they died for something worth something. When people just randomly get killed, though, that's annoying.
